Trend Watch: Wallpaper in Unusual Places

Wallpaper is back, and it’s bigger than ever! Everyone’s favorite trend from the 80s is now reemerging in homes across America but this time pastels and florals have been replaced by bold colors and geometric prints. Today’s homeowners use wallpaper to create effects that aren’t possible with paint. The goal isn’t to use the most wallpaper; it’s to make the biggest statement with the wallpaper that is used.
Many are taking wallpaper to new heights in unusual locations around the home. We’ve highlighted a few eclectic ways wallpaper can be used in your home. These applications are unique, chic, and undoubtedly fun!
What a Feeling, Wallpaper on the Ceiling
Yes, the ceiling. In a trick that has long been utilized on the porches of the South, homeowners are now discovering how a punch of color on the ceiling can truly change the entire feel of a room. Ceilings are a great place to apply wallpaper because they are removed from pets, children, and other hazards wallpaper can often face. Even better, wallpaper on the ceiling highlights trim and moldings that your eye may not initially be drawn to.
Use multiple wallpapers on the ceiling, like the dynamic HGTV design duo the Novogratz’s did in this New York nursery…
Or bathe the entire ceiling in a swatch of pattern like this Moorestown, New Jersey home featured on Hooked on Houses.
Step Up in Style
You climb the stairs every day, why not make them visually interesting? Wallpapering your stairs adds small pops of color and can help make the transition between the décor of the first floor and second floor. Even better, wallpaper on the stairs is a small financial commitment that can removed within an hour and only takes one roll to complete.
Martha Stewart suggests wallpaper on the stair risers as a first step to adding pattern into your home.
Rachael of Lovely Crafty Home added textured wallpaper to her stair risers for a subtle but sweet effect.
A Small Amount Makes a Big Impact
Take wallpaper to the furniture! On the bookshelves, dressers, even filing cabinets can get a nice update with wallpaper. Even better, small samples of wallpaper may do the trick, saving you money!
Casey remade her standard issue filing cabinet into a showstopper with bold geometric paper.
